Woodlands Campus

Hurst Lodge Woodlands guides pupils from Year 2 through to Year 6, providing each child with a rounded learning experience within the security of a happy school.

Welcome to Woodlands Campus at Hurst Lodge

Woodlands Campus is a nurturing and inclusive setting where every child is supported to thrive through a multisensory, holistic approach to learning.

Rooted in the Harmony Curriculum, we explore meaningful themes through nature, sustainability, and real-world connections, helping children understand their place in the world.

We specialise in small-group, highly supported education for pupils with additional needs, including those with EHCPs. Our curriculum is tailored to the individual using Primary National Curriculum objectives, adapted to match each child’s level and learning style.

Our teaching of English follows the Talk for Writing approach — rich in oral storytelling, drama, and repetition to embed vocabulary and structure. We prioritise early reading as the foundation of our students’ learning. We use Soundswrite as our synthetic phonics programme for those children who need structured phonics learning.

For Maths, we primarily use Number Stacks, a hands-on mastery programme that breaks concepts into small, visual steps for deeper understanding.

Our school days are: Monday – Thursday, 8:45am to 3:30pm and Friday, 8:45am – 12.45pm.

Hurst & Lodge: Two Paths, One Community

At Woodlands Campus, we welcome both Hurst and Lodge children — all learning side by side in a kind, inclusive environment where everyone is valued for who they are.

  • Hurst children follow a more traditional academic path, working broadly at age-related expectations, but often benefit from our small classes, higher-adult ratios and multisensory teaching style. Children in Hurst may have an EHCP and their learning is tailored to help meet their outcomes.
  • Lodge children may be working significantly behind national curriculum expectations, often due to specific learning needs such as dyslexia, speech and language difficulties, or developmental delay. Their learning is more personalised and closely linked to EHCP targets.

Both groups access the same rich, engaging curriculum — including forest school, cookery, trips, and creativity — but the pace, support, and outcomes are tailored to each child’s individual needs.

To ensure every child is making meaningful progress, we assess learning and development each term, using a mix of observation, one-to-one tasks, and child-friendly tools. These checks help us celebrate progress, adapt plans, and keep everyone moving forward with confidence.

Our shared ethos is that progress looks different for every child, and success is measured in confidence, independence, and joy — not just test scores.

We embrace the outdoors as an extension of the classroom. Pupils take part in Forest Schoolmusic, and cookery every week, with outdoor learning woven into the curriculum wherever possible. Every half term includes a curriculum-linked trip or event to enrich real-life learning and a celebration day for families to visit our open classrooms.

We are proud to offer:

  • A beautiful woodland setting
  • Small class sizes with higher adult ratios
  • Target Time focused on EHCP outcomes and personal areas for growth and progress
  • Interventions including Emotional Learning Support Assistant (ELSA),Occupational Therapy (OT)Speech and Language Therapy (SALT), and Learning Support Teaching (LST) where specified in EHCPs or as part of the offer of placement
  • Assistive technology to support access and communication in lessons
  • A mix of our Lodge and Hurst children, learning together in a kind, inclusive environment
  • Daily use of Tapestry to document and share children’s learning journeys

At Woodlands, we believe every child deserves to feel proud, understood, and empowered. Through care, creativity, and connection to nature, we help them grow in confidence.
